NL-ix entrusts its equipment to the sustainable data center EvoSwitch
Posted on: 16-05-2007
In terms of the number of members, NL-ix is the fifth biggest Internet exchange in the world and has recently concluded an agreement with EvoSwitch for accommodating equipment in its energy-efficient datacenter in Haarlem. NL-ix expects that its peering services will attract new customers to EvoSwitch who are interested in lower costs for Internet traffic.
So who might be interested in NL-ix’s peering services? The answer is consumer access providers, hosting providers, application service providers or simply high-volume users. “So actually it’s for all companies that have a lot of Internet traffic,” says Jan Hoogenboom, Managing Director of NL-ix. "Actually, the turning point starts at around 10 to 15 Megabits of Internet traffic, because there are initial expenses when it comes to such things as ports and equipment.”
"Peering is also very attractive for companies for whom the availability of the Internet connection is very important. In fact, peering also provides the security of being able to keep up and running with the help of multiple network suppliers.” All NL-ix’s equipment is now housed in eighteen different carrier-neutral datacenters in the Amsterdam region – including EvoSwitch – so as to be able to serve all NL-ix customers in their own datacenter.
Peering in EvoSwitch
Through 'peering', new and existing EvoSwitch customers can exchange their Dutch Internet traffic through NL-ix, which can lead to cost savings of up to 90 percent! Normally, companies purchase so-called transit-traffic from providers like Versatel, KPN, Global Crossing and Level3. This results in a relatively high fee, irrespective of whether Dutch or international Internet traffic is involved. With peering, you can make agreements with other parties in the NL-ix network to exchange traffic free of costs.
No electricity shortage in Haarlem
"EvoSwitch is an interesting datacenter for a number of reasons,” says Hoogenboom. “The datacenters in Amsterdam are starting to reach maximum capacity. A number of them are already full and there’s a shortage of space in other datacenters. EvoSwitch still has enough space available and we’ll soon be able to expand even further. So the shortage in the market is making EvoSwitch attractive.”
"A second advantage is that the electricity supply in Haarlem is not quite the issue that it is in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, there are already tens of datacenters that use a lot of power, while this is not yet the case in Haarlem. So EvoSwitch has sufficient energy capacity. That is certainly interesting for the long term. Although existing datacenters may still have enough capacity, the more power they use for customer equipment and cooling, the closer they get to the limit. That constitutes a risk. The chances of this happening at EvoSwitch are not so great. Moreover, in terms of purchasing, EvoSwitch has made good arrangements for its electricity supply.”
